Our History

Shortly after opening The Shepherd's Cottage, Nancy Vistain and Kathy Pennau attended a women's conference in Milwaukee.  The idea to have a mini version of such an event began to take form.  As they worked at the bookstore, many women customers affirmed that something like that would be well received in this rural community.  Nancy and Kathy wondered if an interdenominational conference could be sponsored by a Christian bookstore.  After talking to other women in the community, a meeting was called, and plans for the very first annual Rural Christian Women's Conference began!

After the first year, the facility chosen was too small so the conference began meeting at the public school.  First the middle school, later the high school, still later a combination of the local McComb/Bruchs Performing Arts Center.  It's currently held at Parkside Middle School each year since the facility has proven to be the most accommodating to our needs at present.  A Statement of Faith and Purpose was also adapted by the planners.  This made it possible to have sound guidelines to follow when inviting people to speak at the event.

Over the years many women from almost every denomination have taken part in the conference, whether as speakers, planners, pray-ers, or attendees.  Each year the attendance at the conference has grown, and God has blessed the plans, and the purpose of this event has been fulfilled in the hearts of the women who attend.  The conference is not a club nor a substitute for church involvement.  It is a ministry unto itself, designed to encourage women to grow in the faith of Jesus Christ as they face the challenges of everyday life.

Rural christian women's conference
statement of faith and purpose

Our purpose

We are a group of women from various denominations committed to encouraging one another in faith in Jesus Christ.  Our conference was organized to provide for the needs of rural women who, for various reasons are unable to attend similar functions in urban areas.  Because our various church doctrines may differ in the way that we view forms of worship, baptism, and traditions, we strive to avoid any teachings in these areas.  Instead, we help one another grow in the things that are essential to the Christian faith.

Our statement of faith

1.  We believe the Bible to be the inspired Word of God without error in the original writings.  It is       the complete revelation of God's will, salvation, and the final authority for Christian faith and life.

2.  We believe in one God, creator of all things, and that He exists in three persons: Father, Son,
     and Holy Spirit.

3.  We believe that Jesus is true God and true man, having been conceived of the Holy Spirit and
born of the Virgin Mary.  He died on the cross for our sins and rose from the dead, ascended      into heaven, where at the right hand of God, he is our High Priest and advocate.

4.  We believe the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and to convict of us of
sin, to regenerate us, live in us, guide us, instruct and empower us to live godly lives and serve      God.

5.   We believe that we were created in the image of God but fell into sin and are therefore lost.
Only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained.

6.  We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for
justification and salvation for all who believe, and only such as receive Jesus Christ are born of      the Holy Spirit, and thus become children of God.  When we receive Him we also receive                  everlasting life and joy with the Lord.
